LA County Eyes First-of-Its-Kind Cooling Ordinance for Rentals Amid Rising Heat Risks

Los Angeles County Supervisors plan to vote on an ordinance requiring landlords to keep rental units at or below 82°F, effective September with enforcement starting in 2027. It applies to unincorporated areas and cities adopting the code, covering about 72,665 units. Landlords can use various cooling methods but must allow tenants to install their own devices. The measure aims to protect vulnerable residents from deadly indoor heat.
